The Franklin McKinley Children’s Initiative is a collaboration of partner organization working in the Santee neighborhood in east San Jose.
Every FMCI child graduates High School ready for College and Career.
A community partnership that supports children from cradle to career through; 1) Community Schools; 2) Safe and Strong Neighborhoods; and 3) Economic Development.
FMCI works in partnership with the community, local service providers as well as partner agencies: City of San Jose, Santa Clara County Office of Education, Franklin McKinley School District and Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County to provide resources to the students and their families of the target schools. Our geographic scope encompasses Santee Elementary, Jeanne R. Meadows Elementary, Robert F. Kennedy Elementary, Bridges Academy, College Connection Academy, Cornerstone Academy and Rocketship Mosaic Elementary.
This collaboration of partners, service providers and community members meet monthly to identify, research, and streamline resources focused on the FMCI mission. By using a collective impact approach, FMCI partners break down the silos of working in isolation to address the needs in the community.
Three focus strategies:
- Community Schools
- Safe and Strong Neighborhoods
- Economic Development
Through working groups, FMCI has fostered relationships between vital partners in the community.
- Community Garden where 32 families have access to fresh food
- Life Learning Lab for neighborhood schools
- Open space and access to community park
- Every semester 50 parents participate in beginners and intermediate English as a Second Language
- Every summer students with no prior early education experience are prepared for kinder through a Bridge to Kinder program
- Every semester 15-25 university and community volunteers conduct tutoring and mentoring to youth at Santee School
