Day Break helps caregivers manage the complex, and often complex, day-to-day demands of caring for an older loved one with dementia or memory loss, Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s, or suffering from a stroke. DAY BREAK VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:
I. Adult Day Care Center Volunteer
The Day Break adult day care centers provide a safe activity center for dependent seniors so that their family caregivers can get a much-needed break. Volunteers help the seniors engage in recreational activities (arts & crafts, reminiscence activities, games & puzzles, etc.) to stimulate cognitive and social skills; physical activities such as exercise and yoga to maintain physical functioning; and social interaction amongst peers to reduce seniors’ isolation. Volunteers are encouraged to share their unique talents with the group.

II. Escorted Transportation Driver
Day Break provides escorted transportation for frail, homebound, and/or dependent elders, the majority of whom are suffering from mild to moderate dementia. Volunteers trained by the Day Break staff are available to provide up to 3 hours per week of escorted transportation to these seniors so that they can primarily go to the grocery store and their medical appointments. The volunteers remain with the seniors throughout the scheduled trips, providing companionship and any assistance as needed. Mileage reimbursement is available for volunteers.
Dates/Times: Monday – Friday, 8 – 5 p.m.
III. In-Home Respite Care/Socialization Provider
Day Break offers caregiving families weekly in-home respite care and socialization visits (2-4 hours per visit) provided by trained volunteers. The volunteers go into the families’ homes and help the dependent seniors engage in physical fitness activities (i.e. dancing, stretching, tai-chi, yoga, etc.); musical activities; arts & craft projects (i.e. painting, sewing, holiday-themed projects, etc); and cognitive stimulation activities (i.e. reminiscing, puzzles, word games, board games, etc.) while the family caregivers get a much-needed break. Mileage reimbursement is available for volunteers.
